Open PvE, NPC factions
My role and responsibilities:
For the whole playfield and all of the bosses, my role and responsibilities were the same, covering:
- Concepting theme and quests
- Designing bosses and encounters
- Magic spells
- Particle effects
- Assembling NPCs (assigning looks and abilities, etc)
As the Northern Grasslands is the first high level zone of Khitai, this was where we were going to introduce a lot of new things for the players.
The intention was – among other things – to give the players a feeling of moving around in a massive, open, dynamic area with a life and events of it’s own.
In order to establish this feeling, playfield-wide herding horses, occational meteor rain showers, and faction vs faction NPC invasions were implemented – there would now always be something going on in the zone, even if the players were not actively triggering something through their actions. This gave the playfield the liveliness, we wanted.
Furthermore, the Northern Grasslands was also the playfield where we would introduce the faction system to the players for the first time, which they could (or not, if that’s what they preferred) explore.
This was another reason for the importance of the presence of the different factions mentioned above.
We had to build into the gameplay how the different factions related to and differed from eachother – and in this way motivate the players to take active part in the conflicts.
The Northern Grasslands is the first high level zone of Khitai. From there, the players can travel to 3 other zones, Chosain Province, Kara Korum, and Paikang.
The Northern Grasslands is a quite big playfield, and is divided into sub-zones in which the different NPC factions of Khitai rule.
The players will learn how they can use the faction system by being loyal to the different factions, and how those factions will each rewarded them for their loyalty - and punish them for their disloyalty!
